Immanuel
Immanuel (Hebrew: עִמָּנוּאֵל), which means “God with us,” is a title of the Messiah prophesied in the Bible. The book of Isaiah in the Old Testament prophesied that the Messiah, who would save mankind, would be born as a baby and named Immanuel.[1] This prophecy was fulfilled through Jesus, God who came in the flesh.[2]
Prophecy of Immanuel
The prophet Isaiah prophesied that God Jehovah would come as the Messiah. It was prophesied that a virgin would be with child and give birth to a son, who would be called Immanuel.
Therefore the LORD himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
The name Immanuel comes from combining the Hebrew words “Immanu” (עִמָּנוּ) meaning “with us,” and “El” (אֵל) meaning “God.” So, it means “God with us.” In the book of Isaiah, the “God” mentioned refers to God Jehovah.[3][4] Strictly speaking, the prophecy of Immanuel means that God Jehovah Himself would come to this world and be with His people.
Jesus Fulfilled the Prophecy
Jesus, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born as a child through the body of the virgin Mary, fulfilled the prophecy of Immanuel, “God with us.” This means that Jesus is God Jehovah. Matthew, who firmly believed that Jesus is fundamentally Jehovah, testified that Jesus is the Christ by explaining the meaning of the name Immanuel.
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. . . . “. . . you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” . . . “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
God is the Creator who made the heavens and the earth and all things, and He has a majesty and glory that no one can dare to look upon Him. Apostle Paul described God as “the one who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see.”[5] Just as the clouds cover the light, Jesus came to this earth in the flesh to cover the light of God’s glory.
