Features

Mozambique, located in southeastern Africa, is renowned—together with Madagascar—as one of the world’s richest reservoirs of biodiversity. Supported by UNESCO and the international community, the government has placed strong emphasis on conserving this natural heritage. Maputo, the capital, sits along Maputo Bay and serves as the nation’s principal port and economic hub.

The truth of the new covenant was first introduced to Mozambique around 2011, when Mozambican students studying in South Africa received God Elohim and, upon returning home, shared the truth with their families and neighbors. To support this mission, a member couple relocated from South Africa. As the number of those seeking God’s word continued to grow, a Korean missionary was dispatched in 2017, leading to the official establishment of the Church of God in Maputo. Today, members who keep the feasts of life can also be found in Beira, Nampula, Xai-Xai, and Morrumbala.

United in faith in God the Mother, the members of the Church of God in Maputo work together to build a nation filled with God’s love. By consistently carrying out environmental clean-up activities in areas such as the square in front of Maputo City Hall and Malanga Market, they contribute to crime prevention while providing citizens with a more pleasant environment.[1] An official in charge of environmental and public health at Maputo City Hall, who participated in the clean-up efforts, praised the members, saying, “Public awareness of environmental clean-up activities is still relatively low, so we are grateful that the church members are taking the initiative. These activities have had a positive impact on the prevention of various diseases as well as on citizens’ mental health.”[2]

The university volunteer group ASEZ and the young adult worker group ASEZ WAO have also joined these efforts. During school breaks and holidays, Korean members worked with them to clean Eduardo Mondlane University and Praça dos Trabalhadores, raising awareness and encouraging citizen participation.

Young adult members further engage in more structured public-service projects in cooperation with government agencies and field experts. A student from Eduardo Mondlane University who is also a Church member attended the Worldwide ASEZ Summit in Korea, where he exchanged ideas on crime-prevention programs with students from around the world and received guidance from international leaders.[3] ASEZ members in Washington, D.C., U.S. also strengthened cooperation with the Embassy of Mozambique.[4] Maputo Mayor David Simango signed a statement of support for ASEZ WAO, expressing encouragement for young people advancing sustainale development.[5]

Church members in Mozambique are likewise active in practicing neighborly love. They conduct consistent blood drives to help patients in need[6] and visit orphanages, offering care through cleaning activities and cultural programs.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, members launched the “Hand to Hand” relay and “Heart to Heart” project to support frontline medical staff,[7][8] delivering handwritten letters and snacks to hospitals as expressions of gratitude. To foster encouragement and connection during social distancing, the church also hosted online concerts. In March 2022, the Messiah Orchestra Online Concert for the Passover was livestreamed from the Okcheon Go&Come Training Institute in Korea and warmly received by viewers in Mozambique. Audiences responded enthusiastically, and José Majula Zarafi Marcos, Economic Adviser to the Speaker of the National Assembly, described the event as “truly fantastic,” adding that while such opportunities were rare, the online format made participation easy and enjoyable.[9]

In addition, members host Bible seminars and cultural exchange programs, including traditional Korean game events, offering opportunities for Bible study and fellowship while sharing happiness with the community.
