Features
Located in the southern United States, Texas shares its southern border with Mexico, divided by the Rio Grande River. The state is rich in natural resources such as oil and natural gas, serving as a major hub for the petrochemical industry. It also ranks among the nation’s top producers of cotton, rice, corn, and livestock.
Houston, the largest city in Texas, is home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, a key site for space exploration. With more than 4,600 energy-related companies, Houston is known as the “Energy Capital of the World.”[1]
The Church of God in Houston is dedicated not only to sharing the blessings of the New Covenant Passover but also to serving the local community through a variety of volunteer initiatives.
Members have taken the lead in improving public spaces by conducting cleanups in Woodland, Mason, and Stude Parks. They have also organized blood drives to help alleviate blood shortages, encouraging active participation from community members.
The Church carries out ongoing outreach for marginalized neighbors. Members visit children’s burn hospitals, offering programs of love and encouragement for young patients, and hold cultural events in senior care centers, such as group dances and short plays, to bring comfort and joy to the elderly.[2]
Church members are also active in emergency relief. Following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, they promptly participated in recovery efforts throughout the Houston area, offering practical help and emotional support to affected residents.[3][4]
ASEZ, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, has also contributed significantly to community service in Houston. In January 2021, about 30 ASEZ members volunteered at the Houston Food Bank, helping package food for approximately 4,500 people in need. Kathy Lipman, Senior Manager at the Houston Food Bank, expressed gratitude and hope for continued collaboration with ASEZ.[5]
For its consistent volunteer efforts and dedication to community well-being, the Church of God in Houston received The President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award in recognition of its outstanding contributions to both the community and the nation.
