Features
Epsom is a town located 22 kilometers southwest of London and is considered part of the Greater London commuting area. London, the capital of the United Kingdom, is a global hub for economy, transportation, and culture. With over 2,000 years of development along the River Thames, the city is home to iconic landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the royal residence; the British Museum, which houses over 8 million artifacts and folk art from across global civilizations; and the National Gallery, renowned for its extensive collection of Western European paintings from the Renaissance to the early 20th century.
As a city with deep historical roots, London is also known as a representative multicultural metropolis, where immigrants from many different countries have settled. It is estimated that about one-third of the city’s population is composed of immigrants.[1] In this diverse environment, members of the Church of God in London live out their faith together with people from various national backgrounds, learning the virtues of mutual understanding, respect, harmony, and selflessness. United in heart, they also strive to reveal the glory of God by practicing good deeds in their neighborhoods and local communities. Even before the establishment of the church in this area, the members collaborated with the Church of God in Manchester, located four hours away, to spread the message of salvation and engage in volunteer work to enhance the happiness and well-being of their neighbors and society.
Volunteers have carried out cleanups in areas including Epsom Town Centre and Isleworth, and collaborated with the Church of God in Manchester to clean Old Trafford and Salford.[2][3][4][5] In 2019, members cleaned Epsom Waterloo Street and painted surrounding facilities and walls to improve the local environment.
ASEZ, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, conducted cleanups around West Thames College, Elephant and Castle, and Harrow, together with Korean members visiting London on a cultural exchange program.[6][7] ASEZ WAO, the Church of God Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group, organized environmental cleanups in Sutton[8] and, as part of the “Mother’s Forest” project, planted trees along Hook Road to promote a pleasant and sustainable environment.[9]
Church members also conduct a variety of community service activities to provide practical support to local residents. One notable example is the blood drive, organized to help patients in urgent need of transfusions. To ensure participation, members take care of their health in the days leading up to the event and dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to the cause.[10]
In addition to environmental and health-related activities, members of the Church of God have organized events to show appreciation for local public safety workers.[11] They visited Kingston Fire Station to deliver snacks and comfort items in recognition of the firefighters’ work in fire prevention and suppression. In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, members visited Epsom Fire Station to provide snack kits in support of quarantine personnel. Together with ASEZ members from UCA and Queen Mary University of London, ASEZ WAO members also visited Epsom Hospital, where they delivered encouragement kits and handwritten letters to frontline medical staff.[12]
Volunteer work is highly valued in the United Kingdom, where organizations above a certain size are required by law to register as volunteer groups. In 2016, the Church of God in the UK received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of its contributions to the community.[13]
